Things To Do - Activities

    One of the attractions of a Holwell holiday is undoubtedly the opportunity to enjoy total escapism. Get back to basics and become one with the nature that surrounds you. Peace, quite, solitude, clear air and sparkling night skies await.

However, if you would like to build your holiday around one of the many activities Holwell specialises in or include an activity or two in your itinerary, here are a few ideas for you

By far the most exciting way to see and appreciate Dartmoor is from a saddle.  At Holwell we encourage guests to bring their own horse(s) on holiday.  The riding from the farm is unsurpassed and the views quite spectacular.

Hirelings can be arranged for a day's hunting with the South Devon and there is even an adjacent Cross Country Course operated and owned by the South Devon Hunt Pony Club.

There are regular equine events during the year at Holwell including the opportunity to handle some of the Wild Dartmoor Ponies bred at Holwell.  Click here for more infomation;

    One of the activities that is available all year round on Dartmoor is fly fishing.  You can choose from the tributaries of the River Dart on the high moor where the water first rises to the wider reaches of the River on the Holne Chase Hotel beat.  Alternatively, you can travel to the nearby trout lakes for rainbow trout.

A gillie service, equipment hire and information is available from the hotel; call 01364 631471 for more.

    Holwell is home to a varied and rich wildlife. Flora and fauna greet you at every turn. This is a special place which has been allowed to be reclaimed by nature over the generations in many areas of the estate. One of the largest mires on Dartmoor is where you will hear Curlew and Snipe. Higher up the valley there are Woodcock and breeding Lapwing. A comprehensive Wildlife Survey has been carried out on Holwell and a Folder containing information on the flora and fauna to watch out for is available on request from the owners.  You can also click the link below for more information;

On Dartmoor there is really something for everyone. Gentle strolls along easily navigated paths combine with more ambitious hiking routes which will keep you going for up to a day at a time. The Dartmoor National Park offers a really great Guided Walk service and we can arrange for a Park Ranger to take you for walks in advance of your stay. This is one of the best ways of getting the most from your walk with wildlife and historical information being relayed at the same time as enjoying the scenery.

Certainly a “greener” approach to getting about on your visit to Dartmoor. We can hire in cycles for the whole family that are here for your arrival and duration of stay. We would need to know details of those requiring cycles in advance of your stay so we can get the right size and type to best suit.
